Over the course of her career, Tracey Ullman has made scores of appearances on talk/chat shows in the US and elsewhere, promoting her then-current or forthcoming projects. I have been fortunate enough to record the vast majority of these for my personal collection, which enables me to summarize them in this guide.
This guide includes all known talk show appearances (late-night, prime-time and daytime) and daytime news program appearances. It does not include interviews on news magazines (i.e., West 57th) or entertainment news programs (Showbiz Today, Entertainment Tonight). It does include at least one Webcast, but it currently does not include radio interviews, though it may in the future.
Several of the listed appearances do not have summaries. That is generally because I have not had the time to watch them again and summarize them. I apologize for that.
Caveat: It's not easy to capture all the nuances of a conversation and turn them into written form. Keep that in mind as you read the summaries.
Partially known appearances
Tracey is known to have appeared a few times on Wogan, the Terry Wogan talk/chat show from Britain. Unfortunately, I have very few details about these appearances, such as when they were, although she is reported to have brought baby Mabel on one appearance (that would have to be from 1986). I presume these would be similar to her appearances on David Letterman's show in the same period. |

1. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, January 22

Earlier this evening was Conan O'Brien's final night as host of The Tonight Show, and Jimmy Fallon and The Roots had paid tribute to him during their show. After Brendan Fraser's low-key appearance and the biathlon competition between him and Jimmy, Jimmy introduces Tracey. The Roots play her onto the stage with a George Clinton tune, the theme from her old Tracey Ullman Show (TTUS). "I haven't heard that in a long time," she says as she takes her seat. Jimmy is really psyched that she's guesting, for he's been a fan "forever." He mentions another reason why the band played the TTUS theme: recognizing the spinoff of The Simpsons. That'll be on her gravestone, she says: "She started The Simpsons." She repeats her oft-stated remarked that she "breast-fed the yellow people," but they haven't been scarce; she hears from them every quarter, referring to the financial rewards of a bit of ownership. That has kept her from having to take jobs like guest spots on Law & Order in her old age ("the DNA's the same in England"). She then turns to Brendan and mentions that whenever she's having plaster casts of her face made for the purposes of making prosthetics, she sees his picture. And only one person has a wider head: "Bobby from Dallas," referring to Patrick Duffy, although she calls him "Patrick Ewing" at first, confusing the actor's and character's last name (certainly not a reference to basketball legend Patrick Ewing); she gets it right later. "That'll be on my tombstone!" Brendan quips. He's still sweating from the biathlon run.

Tracey appeared in four segments in the second hour of the program: at the end of the news; in her main interview segment; outside at the bottom of the hour; and helping to model a striped scarf and earrings.

1. The Early Show, March 18

I did not learn of this interview until after it took place, so I didn't record the broadcast. However, it was available via the CBS News website.
Russ Mitchell introduces Tracey, mentioning it's been a year and a half since became a US citizen [more like a year and a quarter, if she took the oath in December 2006 -- RR] and listing some of the characters she'll be portraying in State of the Union as a clip montage plays on the screen -- Cameron Diaz, David Beckham, Arianna Huffington, and Renee Zellweger. We see a short clip of Tracey as Renee promoting her new film about a journalist wounded in Iraq who develops "chronic narcisistic squint." Has anyone come back and put tacks in your chair, he asks Tracey, meaning has any of her targets ever objected to the portrayals. Not yet, because this is new for her, she says, for she's never portrayed real people on American television before. In the case of Zellweger, it's like she's sucking on a lemon ("you'll get a tack for sure" with that one, says Russ); but she is a terrific actress, Tracey says, and she thinks she'll take it well. Is America that funny, asks Russ. It's very diverse, Tracey says, as she explains the premise of the series: to try to go across America in a day, coast to coast, sea to shining sea, and drop in on everyone. When asked about Tony Sirico, she says she loves him and hopes he doesn't take out a hit on her. Russ mentions other characters, such as an Indian woman at a pharmacy counter and a TV news anchor ("your nightly dose of fear", says Tracey). Where did they come from? Her pharmacist is Indian, and with husband Allan in India producing a new sitcom, she's obsessed with India and Bollywood right now.
